From Chaos to Clarity – Systems Thinking for Complex Problems
In today’s world, we work in systems because they are force multipliers. Unfortunately, systems are also problem multipliers. When your system gets more sophisticated, so do your problems (become more complex). Yet we tend to apply simplistic, reductionist thinking to manage complex issues. The net results – much like 6 blind men each feeling a part of an elephant, “What is the real problem?” becomes a common refrain at senior management.
Instead, what we need is an elevation of our thinking skills – we need the ability to see systems in action, the connectivity and interaction of visible and invisible forces that contribute to a complex issue. In short, we need to see Systems.
Systems Thinking is the discipline that enables one to be aware of, to diagnose, and ultimately, to manage a system effectively and efficiently. It enables us to see the big picture, the components, as well as the connections in between. Systems Thinking is both the art of adopting a systems-level approach, as well as the suite of tools to generate and capture the wisdom of such discussions.
Why is it important?
We all work in systems – and if you cannot properly diagnose and manage the system, it will manage and overwhelm you.
